Howard Hawks' Hollywood

Dedicated to the spirit and memory of Howard Hawks, the versatile director of Hollywood's golden age. He made more good films than any other American director, co-writing and producing many of his 46 films. He was also an accomplished engineer, outdoorsman, and pilot whose friends included Ernest Hemingway and Howard Hughes. PLEASE VISIT THE NEW ANNEX FOR THE BEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME
Howard Hawks worked with all three of the great early 30’s gangsters: Paul Muni in Hawks’ own Scarface, James Cagney (from Public Enemy) in The Crowd Roars and Ceiling Zero, and Edward G Robinson (from Little Caesar) in Tiger Shark and Barbary Coast.
Ann Dvorak, seen here in a publicity still with Cagney from The Crowd Roars, was discovered by Howard Hawks at a party with George Raft.  Ann is one of only three  actresses Howard used more than once.  He made two with Bogart and Bacall, and in the 60’s he used Charlene Holt in Man’s Favorite Sport, Red Line 7000, and most notably in El Dorado.
