He made more good films than any other American director, co-writing and producing many of his 46 films. After Twentieth Century, Howard Hawks went back to United Artists where he made Scarface with Howard Hughes, and directed Barbary Coast, his first historical costumer.  This was the first of three films he directed for producer Samuel Goldwyn.
